All of this makes him an indispensable voice in the world of design, architecture, and scenography.
Mauro brings together two hearts in his work: a love for aesthetics, reflected in his design projects, and a passion for dramaturgy, which he integrates into narrative spaces. Whether it’s the clear, elegant design of projects like Brand as Host, Tradition Meets Modernity, or Axpo Transformation, or the emotional experiences he creates with spatial designs like the Museo cantonale di storia naturale (Natural History Museum) in Locarno – Mauro lives and designs from two perspectives that together create something truly unique.
Below, we delve deeper into the award-winning Natural History Museum Locarno, a project that impresses with its emotional intensity.
The goal of the project was not only to bring visitors closer to the nature of Ticino but also to make the complex interconnections of environmental changes under human influence more understandable. The exhibition provided clear, dramaturgically structured narratives and allowed visitors to immerse themselves deeply in the history and processes of nature. The spatial design followed a clear sequence, with innovative visual and acoustic solutions across three floors, intensifying the experience.
The scenographic implementation featured a circular exhibition path, complemented by a spectacular room illuminated from above (canon de lumière). A lift, designed as a “time travel machine,” added a fascinating dimension to the exhibition and connected the different sections in an innovative way. This combination of spatial design and narrative storytelling made the museum stand out from the other competition entries.
Aroma Architecture, together with its partners, ultimately won 1st place in the international competition for the design of the new Natural History Museum in the S. Caterina Monastery complex in Locarno. The project impressed the jury with its precise execution of museographic requirements and a unique concept that placed the geological, biological, and anthropological characteristics of Ticino in a global context.
We would like to express our gratitude to the entire team that made this award-winning project possible: mlzd Architects, Buzzi Architetti, Chavez Biedermann Landscape Architects, and Construction Engineers Lüchinger Meyer, and IFEC. Together, we created a space that not only showcases the origins of the world 400 million years ago but also celebrates the beauty and uniqueness of Ticino’s nature, while encouraging reflection on the role of humanity in nature.
